The
Highland House, Inc. maintains that
while a person may have not been responsible for a predisposition toward
alcohol and other drug abuse; they are responsible for their own
behavior and, therefore, are responsible for their own alcohol and other
drug abuse and recovery. The treatment staff are catalysts and
facilitators in the recovery process. Our belief is that most people
with alcohol and other drug abuse problems have the potential to
overcome these problems. Since
people do not exist in isolation and are multi-dimensional.
It
is usually necessary to draw on a variety of resources designed to meet
a particular individuals needs. This may include available human service
agencies, clergy, the medical profession, family, and self-help groups.
A comprehensive approach utilizing these resources is encouraged
whenever possible in order to better serve the clients complex needs. The
individual’s behavior whether intoxicated or sober is focused on while
in treatment. The field in which he/she exists is examined in terms of
supports and inhibitors of health behavior. The alcohol and other drug
abuse is viewed as being part of the person’s repertoire of behavioral
alternatives and how this particular behavior fits into the individuals
system of functioning and values. Counseling
emphasizes the here and now while keeping in mind how the person got
where he or she now is. A treatment approach whether individual, group
or family counseling or referral to residential or inpatient treatment
is based on that persons present conditions and future needs. Our purpose is to facilitate and challenge the client to look realistically at her/his life and exercise her/his responsibility for altering his behavior in such a way that will meet her/his basic needs in a more functional and positive way. Counseling is only one of several tools; therefore clients are urged to become involved in other therapeutic activities such as AA, NA, and practice of their religious beliefs, family life and other fulfilling relationships. The development of positive peer relationships and support systems are essential to a continuation of the recovery process.
